Explore the seasons below to discover what makes each one special.

Winter in Ruka

Will you answer the call of the slopes and cross-country ski trails, or are you looking for something different to fill your winter days? There are plenty of ways to enjoy Ruka’s snowy wilderness in Northern Finland at a gentler pace too. Strap on a pair of snowshoes and walk across deep snow and through peaceful forests, without needing any previous experience.

Savour a dinner inspired by Finnish wild food and ingredients sourced from the surrounding forests and lakes, then relax in the hot tub and keep an eye on the dark northern sky for the aurora borealis. For a truly Finnish experience, you can even take an icy dip through a hole cut into a frozen lake – often followed by a warming sauna.

For a little more animal company, head into the snowy wilderness on a husky safari or meet and feed the reindeer that are such an iconic part of life in the north. And Ruka has a few more unusual experiences up its sleeve: try gentle yoga in the warmth of a Finnish sauna, float through icy rapids in a protective thermal suit, or even pay a visit to Santa Claus.

Spring in Ruka

Around May, Ruka’s enchanting northern landscape begins to awaken after the long winter. Spring offers the best of two seasons in one: depending on the snow conditions, you can still enjoy the final days of downhill and cross-country skiing, while increasingly long days and warm spring sunshine hint at the summer ahead.

This is also the season of kantohanki: a Finnish term for the hard crust that forms on top of the snow after freezing nights and sunny spring days. When conditions are just right, the snow becomes firm enough to carry your weight, opening up the landscape for walking, skiing and exploring well beyond the usual trails.

As winter finally gives way to summer, Ruka enters a short transition period known in Finnish as rospuutto. Melting snow and thawing ground can make the landscape wet and muddy, so it may not be Ruka at its most picture-perfect – but there is something rather special about this quiet season too! Fewer visitors, peaceful trails and plenty of space to experience nature almost entirely on your own.

Summer in Ruka

The magnificent landscapes of the north and Ruka’s wealth of activities are every bit as enticing in summer. At this latitude in Northern Finland, summer days are extraordinarily long: around midsummer, the sun barely sets at all. That soft northern light gives you plenty of time to make the most of the outdoors, even late into the evening.

Hike across the fells, brave the rushing rapids on a white-water rafting adventure, hop on a mountain bike or head to Ruka’s rivers and lakes for a day of fishing. You can also admire the green fell landscape from the Village-2-Valley scenic gondola. And if you prefer a little more speed on the way down, take the winding summer sled track back towards the village.

Summer in Ruka also offers experiences with a distinctly northern twist. Venture out with a professional guide to safely observe Finland’s wild brown bears from a purpose-built hide, practice yoga surrounded by sweeping views from the top of a fell, or play a round of golf among Kuusamo’s beautiful forests, lakes and rolling ridges.

Autumn in Ruka

Autumn is one of the most spectacular times to experience Ruka – and the luckiest visitors may even get a taste of three seasons in a single stay, as late summer turns to colourful autumn and the first snow arrives.

September brings ruska, the Finnish name for the short but spectacular period of fall foliage, when the northern forests and fells burst into shades of gold, orange and deep red. It is one of the most celebrated natural events of the Finnish autumn and an especially beautiful time for hiking, mountain biking and photography.

As the nights grow longer and darker, another northern spectacle returns: the aurora borealis. On a clear night away from bright lights, you may be lucky enough to see the northern lights dancing across the sky above Ruka and the surrounding Kuusamo region.

By October, Ruka’s exceptionally long ski season is already beginning. The first slopes open while autumn is still giving way to winter, making this a wonderfully peaceful time to ski before the busier winter months arrive.

And if skis and snowboards aren’t your thing, Ruka has plenty of more leisurely ways to embrace the season. Try yoga in the company of reindeer, indulge in a hot stone massage or experience a traditional Finnish smoke sauna – a wood-heated sauna without a chimney, known for its wonderfully soft heat and distinctive smoky atmosphere. Or perhaps try all three!
